The starting point of our itinerary will be the Francesco Crispi Refuge located at Piano Sempria,
about 8.5 km from Castelbuono, on the slopes of Monte Ferro in the Madonie Regional Natural Park.
The goal of the day will be to reach the giant holly grove of Piano Pomo along
a path characterized by a humid temperature, some not too challenging climbs and the
presence of beech, oak and maples. Once we reach Piano Pomo, before heading towards the holly,
we will stop in front of the reconstruction of the traditional “pagghiaru”, a typical shelter of the
Sicilian mountain areas built by shepherds with easily available materials. At this point
we will finally cross the holly grove enjoying their rare beauty and the suggestive atmosphere of the place. We will then continue to climb encountering several monumental trees until we reach the highest point of the excursion, Cozzo Luminario. From here it will be possible to see on one side a part of the mountains to the east of the Madonie Park, and on the other side a large karst sinkhole in which with a bit of luck it will be possible to see some typical specimens of the Madonie fauna. The route will continue downhill to the starting point. It will also be possible to taste a
typical product of the Castelbuono tradition.
