In that stretch of the Ionian Sea, between Taormina and Catania, stands one of nature’s wonders: the infinite and majestic Etna.
Here the grandeur of that universe is renewed, manifested in its disturbing and fascinating expressions, the living mountain which, with its over 3340 metres, is the highest in Sicily and also the highest active volcano in Europe.
The versatility of the frequent reporting or deporting eruptions stimulates that suggestion deriving from the continuous transformation of the shape of the eruptive vents and their height.
Located in an area of over 59,000 hectares, known as Etna Park, it is one of the largest protected areas in Italy.
Listed among the wonders of the World Heritage by UNESCO for its immense geological, scientific and cultural value, Mount Etna is one of the most significant Italian cultural and naturalistic treasures.
Steeped in history, spirits, superstitions, beliefs and consciences, it represents that real dream where matter plays a fundamental role within the Mediterranean system.
If we think it is still possible to have reasons to be free from pressures and useless appearances, in art, in literature, in thought, why not be so, in the universe of nature, to be harmony and order, to acquire the serenity and well-being of living, the forces of the creation of the world.
It is necessary to retrace the ancient routes of the ascent, the paths of everyday life experienced by the local people, until reaching the summit of the “Muntagna”, along itineraries already a destination for the minds that contributed to what we today identify as the West: Empedocles the great philosopher, the emperor Hadrian, scholars and travellers such as Fazello, Saint Non, Goethe, Dolomieu, Houel and Brydone.
Divided into different hemispheres linked to the altitudes, the volcano offers a huge variety of vegetation, starting from the citrus fruit, in the lower part, up to the chamomile that reaches up to 3000 m, passing through the Corsican pine, the beech, the Etna birch, the sorrel and the Sicilian astragalus.
